A mixed-age sessional pre-school for 2 to 4 year olds
Oxted Pre-school has been playing a role in our community for over 30 years. During that time, we have welcomed hundreds of small children and their families into our warm, caring setting, and sent them on to ‘big school’ as enthusiastic and confident young learners. We know that all children are special, unique individuals,. We value diversity, celebrate our differences, and welcome everyone, regardless of culture, language, social background or ability. Our overarching aim is to give every child the best possible start in life, and to provide them with the support that will enable them to fulfil their potential.
Please come in to meet us and have a look around – no appointment necessary.

From September 2017 the government is increasing funding for 3 and 4 years olds from 15 hours to 30 hours per week. We will be offering fully-funded childcare at Oxted Pre-school for the full extent of our opening hours, provided parents meet the government’s eligibility requirements for the extra 15 hours funding and they meet the conditions we are putting in place. Our conditions apply to both the universal 15 hours and the additional 15 hours.
Learning Through Play
Play is fundamental to all aspects of children’s learning and development – and it’s fun! “Play is essential for children’s development, building their confidence as they learn to explore, to think about problems, and relate to others.” (EYFS, April 2017). With a maximum of 24 children in a session, we have ample room for them to play and explore, both indoors and out.
We pride ourselves on having a staff team who are unfailingly kind and caring.
All Early Years practitioners working at Oxted Pre-school are dedicated to ensuring that every child gets the best possible experience from their pre-school years. On-going training and professional development is undertaken by each member of staff to guarantee that their knowledge and understanding of child development and Early Years practice is up to date and of the highest quality.
We have excellent adult:child ratios, with a maximum of four children per staff member during our core morning sessions. This comfortably exceeds the ratios required by the legislation of the EYFS framework for 3 and 4 year olds (8 children to one adult). Each child is assigned a member of staff to be their Key Person.
All staff are trained in Paediatric First Aid, and in Safeguarding and Child Protection.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
It is a fundamental goal of the staff at Oxted Pre-school that ALL children are supported to make good progress through the Early Years curriculum, and to succeed to the absolute best of their ability.
While Cathy Chilcott is the SENCO (special needs co-ordinator), currently two other members of staff have been fully trained in the SEND Code of Practice, with a third ready to commence this as soon as she has completed other training currently being undertaken. This means we are fully able and prepared to offer that little bit of extra support wherever it is needed, as well as supporting parents/families through paperwork, referrals, and liaison/meetings with other professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists, Educational Psychologists, Paediatricians, etc. Alison Carey is also ELKLAN trained, so children with Speech, Language and Communication needs are fully supported. We are experienced in supporting children who are learning English as an Additional Language (EAL). Oxted Pre-school is located on the ground floor of the United Reformed Church, and can be accessed by wheelchair.

As a registered charity, we are not in the business of making money. ALL fees paid by parents go back into the pre-school to benefit the children. Recruiting a strong, professional team of childcare practitioners is of vital importance to the children’s wellbeing, learning and development, as is providing them with a light, bright, inviting and safe environment filled with appropriate and inspiring resources, and offering them a wide and exciting range of experiences and opportunities. Monies received through parent-paid fees and through government funding are re-invested in the pre-school to ensure that we are able to offer a constantly improving experience for the children and families of Oxted Pre-school.
